Instrumentation Cables are the "nervous system" of modern industrial facilities. They are multiple-conductor cables designed to transmit low-energy electrical signals used for monitoring or controlling chemical, thermal, and electrical processes.
While power cables carry the "muscle" (high voltage/current), instrumentation cables carry the "senses"—connecting sensors (transmitters) to controllers (PLC, DCS) and computers.
The primary goal of an instrumentation cable is signal integrity. To achieve this, they utilize several specialized design features:
Because these cables carry sensitive analog signals (like 4-20mA), they are highly susceptible to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI).
Individual Shielding (IS): Each pair is wrapped in its own foil/braid to prevent "crosstalk" between different signals within the same cable.
Overall Shielding (OS): A single shield surrounds the entire bundle to block external noise from nearby motors or power lines.
By twisting two conductors together, any external electromagnetic field affects both wires equally. This creates "Common Mode Rejection," where the noise is canceled out at the receiving end.
Voltage Rating: Usually low, typically 300V or 500V.
Conductor Material: Usually high-purity annealed copper (plain or tinned) to ensure maximum conductivity and corrosion resistance.
These two are often confused, but using the wrong one can lead to system failure or dangerous signal inaccuracies.
| Feature | Instrumentation Cable | Control Cable |
| Primary Function | Transmits Data & Measurement signals (e.g., 4-20mA, 0-10V) | Transmits Action Commands (e.g., Start/Stop motor, open valve) |
| Typical Voltage | Low (300V) | Higher (600V - 1kV) |
| Interference Requirement | Critical. Always requires shielding/twisting. | Moderate. Shielding is often optional. |
| Application End | Sensors, Transmitters, PLC Inputs | Relays, Contactors, Solenoids, PLC Outputs |
